Part of #19, the last of 4 PRs in the approved sketch. It builds on #168 (merged), which plans each CTE an objective reads more than once on its own.

Why. xarray-sql's GPT demo defines its model as a view (CREATE VIEW logits AS WITH x0 AS (…), … SELECT …), and the loss reads logits once. The layers that are read twice are the view's CTEs, and #168 can't see them in the objective's text.

How.

  • Backend::view_sql(name) is new and optional. It returns a view's defining SQL; the default, None, leaves views to the engine.
    • ddx-datafusion uses ViewTable::definition().
    • ddxdb queries information_schema.views and resolves names as DataFusion does. This works on any SessionContext, xarray-sql's included, with no change to xarray-sql. PyBackend forwards the method.
  • sql/views.rs writes each view the objective reads into the objective as CTEs, before perf(ddx-ad): plan each CTE an objective reads more than once on its own #168 splits it:
    • the view's own CTEs, renamed __ddx_view_{k}_{i}_{name};
    • the view's query, as __ddx_view_{k}, which the objective reads in the view's place;
    • any views it reads, written the same way, ahead of it.

Left to the engine if a view:

  • has no SQL (it was registered from a DataFrame);
  • has the same name as one of the objective's CTEs;
  • doesn't parse;
  • has recursive CTEs, or defines one of its CTE names again;
  • reads a CTE under two spellings.

Fixed in review, each with a test that fails without the fix:

  • a view whose query defines a CTE name again;
  • a view whose CTE names are spelled two ways;
  • name resolution in ddxdb, which could read a table as another schema's view of the same name.
  • a renamed read lost the name its columns were qualified by (SELECT model.v FROM model), so the objective was silently planned whole. It now keeps that name as its alias, and a column qualified by the whole name (public.model.v) is requalified by the alias. perf(ddx-ad): plan each CTE an objective reads more than once on its own #168's placeholder rename had the same flaw, and both now share one helper;
  • a view's generated CTE name could collide with one the objective defines, or shadow a table the objective or a view reads (now left to the engine);
  • with enable_ident_normalization off, a view's name was looked up in lower case, so Model could find the view model. Both backends now follow the session's setting;
  • after a view another view reads was redefined, the outer view's SQL read the new definition while DataFusion still ran the old one (found by fuzzing, test(ddx-datafusion): fuzz the SQL surface's fast paths #173). Each DataFusion backend now gives a view's SQL only while its query, read in its place (ddx_ad::view_probe), plans as DataFusion's kept plan;
  • a read of a CTE nested in a view's subquery could be replaced by a catalog view of the same name, silently changing the gradient;
  • in a DataFusion context without the information schema (one made from its own SessionConfig), views were left to the engine without a word. ddxdb now warns, and DataFusionBackend.view_sql's docstring states the requirement.

ddxdb's parser for view names is now one regular expression instead of a hand-written scanner, as asked in review. It also refuses an empty part (a..b), as DataFusion does.

Tests.

  • A three-layer model view gives the same gradient as the written-out objective, with one placeholder per layer.
  • A twelve-layer model view, 4,096 copies when written out, is planned one layer at a time. DataFusion won't create a much deeper view, because it plans the definition at CREATE; that is why perf(ddx-ad): plan each CTE an objective reads more than once on its own #168's thirty-layer test uses CTEs.
  • A view over a view gives twice the inner model's gradient. This test caught a naming collision that silently lost the factor of 2.
  • A DataFrame view, and a CTE named like a view, both give the engine's answer.
  • In Python (test_ad.py), a model view's gradient through ad.sql matches the written-out objective, with one placeholder per shared layer.

Clippy is clean. sql_shared_ctes and all 53 of ddxdb's Python tests pass locally.

Docs. Design §4.8 and the SQL module docs are updated.

Next. Replay the GPT and GraphCast demos (#158) to measure #19 end to end.

Merge Risk: ⚪ Minimal · up to 1b6ef

The previously identified wrong-view lookup and table-shadowing risks are addressed. No actionable issue remains before normal validation and merge.

Security architecture risk: 🔵 Low · up to 1b6ef

View expansion uses the existing execution context and conservatively falls back to engine-managed views. No introduced authorization bypass was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns concurrent catalog changes and an existing cancellation-cleanup limitation now applicable to view-derived planning.

Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.

Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The inspected path operates through the caller-supplied backend and its existing SessionContext, including that context's catalog and temporary tables. No separate credential or privileged execution context was identified; tenant isolation and authorization outside this context were not established by the available evidence.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • inferred — View-definition validation and subsequent planning are separate operations without a version token in the lookup contract. Concurrent catalog mutation could invalidate the checked equivalence. Sequential stale-definition rejection is covered by inspected tests, but concurrent mutation and any associated lower-trust attack path remain unestablished.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — Cancellation can bypass temporary-table cleanup, as documented at both the PR base and head. This is an inherited lifecycle limitation, not a new cleanup defect. View expansion broadens which objectives can enter the existing placeholder-creation path; ordinary completion and errors still attempt cleanup.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — For integrations that permit catalog mutation during planning, define an explicit serialization or snapshot contract covering view validation through final plan construction. This would make the concurrent-change assumption enforceable rather than relying on lookup-time equivalence alone.

This while loop might be efficient, but it is brittle and unreadable IMO. Since the size of N is always expected to be small, can we use python standard string processing functions/methods to make this more understandable and debuggable? It should be fast enough (IIUC).

Agreed. It's replaced in fed6af6 by one regular expression: a part is "(?:[^"]|"")*" (quoted, with "" for a quote inside it) or [^."]+ (unquoted). fullmatch checks the whole name, and findall splits it into parts. A quoted part is then unescaped; an unquoted one is lowercased. I checked it against 13 names, including c."S"."a.b", "a""b", an unclosed quote, and a..b.

A model is often a view, and its layers, the CTEs it reads twice, are
inside it, where the objective's text does not show them. A new optional
Backend::view_sql gives a view's SQL (DataFusion: ViewTable::definition;
ddxdb: information_schema.views), and rewrite writes each view the
objective reads into it as CTEs before splitting: the view's own CTEs
under fresh names, then its query, all before the objective's CTEs so a
view's catalog reads cannot reach one. A view with no SQL, under a CTE's
name, or whose SQL does not parse is left to the engine.

… resolve view names as DataFusion does

Three gaps a /code-review pass found in writing views as CTEs:
- a name a view's own CTE has, defined again in the view's query (not
  only in its CTEs' bodies), now leaves the view to the engine, where
  renaming every read of it read the wrong CTE;
- so does a view that reads its CTE under another spelling (`a` and
  `"a"`), which share.rs already refuses;
- ddxdb's view_sql resolved a one-part name in any schema; it now uses
  the session's default catalog and schema, as DataFusion does, so a
  table is not read as another schema's view of its name.

A name is parts joined by dots, each quoted (with `""` for a quote) or
unquoted. One pattern says that; the hand-written scanner it replaces
was hard to read. A name with an empty unquoted part, such as `a..b`,
is now refused, as DataFusion refuses it.

… no CTE has

A read renamed to a placeholder or a view's CTE lost the name that
qualified its columns: `SELECT model.v FROM model` became
`... FROM "__ddx_view_0"`, where `model.v` no longer resolves. The plan
then failed and the objective was planned whole, silently inlining the
layers the split exists to plan once. Both renames now go through
`rename_reads`, which gives a read with no alias its old name as one.
The view tests now also check that nothing planned reads the view, since
counting placeholders alone missed the fallback.

A view's generated CTE name could equal one the objective defines, and so
could the names of the view's own hoisted CTEs. Each view now takes the
next name that neither collides itself nor prefixes one the objective
defines.

…en a view's SQL can't be read

A view's reads were all candidates for other views, including a read of
a CTE nested in one of its subqueries. With a catalog view `x` and
`CREATE VIEW v AS SELECT * FROM (WITH x AS (...) SELECT c FROM x) s`, the
inner read became a read of the view `x`; the query still planned, so
the gradient was silently wrong. A name a CTE nested anywhere in the view
has is no longer read as a view.

DataFusionBackend reads a view's SQL from the information schema, which
a context made from its own SessionConfig lacks. The error was swallowed
and every view left to the engine without a word. It now warns once per
context, naming the setting, when the name it can't read is a view.

A read of `public.model` renamed to a view's CTE kept `model` as its
alias, but a column written `public.model.v` still named the old table,
so the plan failed and the objective was planned whole. After renaming,
a column qualified by all of a renamed multi-part name with no alias is
qualified by the alias instead. `same` moves to `build` beside
`rename_reads`, which now uses it.

Honor the session’s identifier-normalization setting.

When datafusion.sql_parser.enable_ident_normalization is false, DataFusion preserves an unquoted name such as Sales. _name_parts still converts it to sales. If both views exist, view_sql("Sales") retrieves the definition of the wrong view, so derivative planning can use the wrong query. Pass ctx.enable_ident_normalization() into the name parser and lowercase unquoted parts only when that setting is enabled. (raw.githubusercontent.com)

fresh skips only names in defined, which contains objective CTE names. If the objective reads view v and catalog table __ddx_view_0, v can receive __ddx_view_0. DataFusion then resolves the unchanged table reference to the generated CTE, which changes the query result.

Track relation names separately from CTE names, and make fresh skip both. Add a DataFusion regression test with a view and a table named __ddx_view_0.

…iew names with the session's case rules

An objective reading a view and a table named `__ddx_view_0` read the
view's CTE for both, and the gradient was silently wrong. A one-part
read of a name starting `__ddx_view_`, in the objective or any view it
expands, now leaves the objective to the engine: no generated name can
then be taken for a table.

A view's name was resolved with unquoted parts in lower case, as
DataFusion does by default. With enable_ident_normalization off,
`Model` and `model` are two views, and reading `Model` found `model`.
Both backends now lower an unquoted part only if the session does.

@coderabbitai Re the two outside-diff findings on 782f56a: both confirmed, and fixed in 22511c8. Each has a test that fails without its fix.

  • views.rs (a table named like a generated CTE): a one-part read of a name starting with __ddx_view_, in the objective or in any view it expands, now leaves the objective to the engine. I didn't track catalog names apart from CTE names. A view's reads are only known after its name is chosen, so no allocation order can avoid a name that a later view turns out to read. a_table_named_as_a_view_s_cte_would_be_is_not_shadowed_by_one reads a view and a table "__ddx_view_0". Its gradient must equal the gradient with the table renamed. Without the fix it was wrong (2.25 vs 6.75).
  • ad.py (identifier normalization): view_sql now reads datafusion.sql_parser.enable_ident_normalization with the defaults, and _name_parts lowercases an unquoted part only when that setting is on. The Rust DataFusion::view_sql had the same flaw (table_provider(&str) always lowercases). It now uses TableReference::parse_str_normalized with the session's setting. Rust and Python tests create views Model and model in a case-sensitive session and check that each name finds its own view.

@alxmrs Thanks for the explanation. I inspected 22511c8; both fixes address the reported findings.

  • CTE name collision: views.rs rejects reserved one-part catalog reads in the objective. A reserved read found during recursive view expansion sets clash, which discards the entire expansion. This avoids dependence on name allocation order. The regression compares gradients against the same table under a non-conflicting name.
  • Identifier normalization: Rust and Python now read the session’s enable_ident_normalization setting. Both regression tests check that Model and model resolve to distinct view definitions when normalization is disabled.

I verified the code and test assertions by inspection. I did not run the tests.

Match view reads by exact spelling.

In a case-preserving session, Model and model are distinct views. same() currently ignores case for both reads. The first rename can therefore replace both relations with one generated CTE. The second view remains unused. share::split then plans and differentiates the incorrect expanded query instead of falling back to the engine. This can silently produce incorrect gradients for a mixed-view objective.

Use exact spelling in the shared comparison. This keeps Backend generic and preserves rename_reads.

😈🧪 Adversarial tester

Bug found by fuzzing, to fix before merge: after a view another view reads is replaced, ad::sql differentiates a loss the engine doesn't compute.

A DataFusion view keeps the plan it was created with. Once inner_v is replaced, outer_v still reads the old inner_v. This PR writes outer_v out from its SQL text, which reads inner_v by name, so it gets the new one:

CREATE TABLE w (i BIGINT, val DOUBLE) AS VALUES (0, 1.0), (1, 2.0);
CREATE VIEW inner_v AS SELECT i, val AS v FROM w;
CREATE VIEW outer_v AS WITH a AS (SELECT i, v FROM inner_v)
  SELECT a.i, a.v * b.v AS v FROM a JOIN a b ON a.i = b.i;
CREATE OR REPLACE VIEW inner_v AS SELECT i, 3.0 * val AS v FROM w;

SELECT SUM(v) FROM outer_v;  -- 5.0: the engine still uses the old inner_v (v = val)
-- ad::sql: WITH loss AS (SELECT SUM(v) AS l FROM outer_v) SELECT i, grad(loss, val) FROM w
--   gives 18, 36 (the new inner_v, v = 3·val)
-- ad::grad on the same loss (the engine's plan) gives 2, 4, which matches the engine

The same thing happens when the whole loss is a view (lossv) and one of the views it reads is redefined. In 2,000 seeds of the new soak property it shows up 3 times, all as [perf-cache after a view's definition].

A possible fix. Write a view out only when its SQL still means what the engine stored. For example, compare plan_key of the view's definition re-planned now with the plan DataFusion keeps (ViewTable::logical_plan()), and leave the view to the engine when they differ. That costs one extra planning per view and needs no new Backend method on DataFusion's side. Another option is for view_sql to return None when a view reads another view or a table that has been replaced since. That's harder to detect.

There's a related problem that is older than this PR: a view also keeps the tables it was created over, and both of ddx's paths read tables by name. I filed that as #172.

The soak property that found this is coming as a PR stacked on this one. Its view check will fail until this is fixed.

…t DataFusion runs

DataFusion keeps the plan a view was made with. After a view another view
reads is redefined, the outer view's SQL reads the new definition while
the engine still runs the old, so writing the view out from its SQL gave
the gradient of a loss the engine doesn't compute. Each DataFusion
backend now gives a view's SQL only if the view's query, read in its
place (ddx_ad::view_probe), plans as the view's kept plan; otherwise the
view is left to the engine, whose plan is the old one. Backend::view_sql
states the contract.

Found by fuzzing (the soak property in #173).

Re the fuzzer's finding (a view another view reads is redefined): confirmed with your repro, and fixed in 8d3474e.

Each DataFusion backend now gives a view's SQL only while it still means what DataFusion runs. ddx_ad::view_probe turns the view's SQL into SELECT * FROM (<query>) AS __ddx_probe (<columns>). The backend plans that probe now and compares the plan under its projection and alias with the plan DataFusion kept. In Rust that's ViewTable::logical_plan(). In Python it's the plan of reading the view, under the same two nodes. If they differ, the view is left to the engine, whose plan is the old one.

I first tried a backend-independent check in views.rs through plan_key. It can't handle a schema-qualified read: DataFusion names that alias public.model, and no SQL alias can reproduce that. So the comparison lives in the backends, and Backend::view_sql now states the contract: the SQL must still mean what the engine runs.

Tests: a_view_that_reads_a_redefined_view_is_left_to_the_engine in Rust and Python. Without the check, Rust gives 9×, 4.5×, 13.5× where it should give 1, −0.5, 1.5. a_view_with_a_column_list_is_written_out checks that the probe matches a view with a column list.

#172, a table re-registered under a view, gets its own PR.

Reject case-colliding view names before rewriting.

When identifier normalization is disabled, same treats distinct unquoted names such as Model and model as equal. The Rust view expansion can therefore replace both reads with the first generated CTE. If shared-CTE planning succeeds, the derivative can read one view twice instead of reading both views.

The fallback in crates/ddx-ad/src/sql/mod.rs uses the original job.query only when splitting or split planning falls back. It does not protect a successful split. This is an incorrect-result defect, not a performance-only fallback. The Python lookup fix does not prevent it because it supplies the correct distinct names to this independent Rust rewrite.

Keep the ambiguity guard before rewriting, including nested view reads.

…o the engine

A view's reads are renamed by name, unquoted parts compared without
case, as most engines resolve them. With DataFusion's
enable_ident_normalization off, `Model` and `model` are two views, and
both reads became the first's CTE; a split that then succeeded gave the
gradient of a loss reading one view twice. An objective, or a view or CTE
query in one, that reads two names alike but for case is now left to the
engine.

@coderabbitai Re the outside-diff finding on 8d3474e (case-colliding view names, build.rs:189-203): confirmed, and fixed in 5ee9bf3.

An objective that reads two names alike except for case is now left to the engine. So is a view, or a CTE query inside one, that does. views::ambiguous checks for this. The rename stays case-insensitive for unquoted names, because that's how most engines resolve them. The guard covers the case where they might not.

names_alike_but_for_case_leave_the_objective_to_the_engine covers Model and model read directly and read through a view. Without the guard both reads become __ddx_view_0.

@alxmrs Thanks for the explanation. I inspected 5ee9bf3. The guard addresses the reported case-colliding view-name issue.

  • views::ambiguous detects distinct spellings that the rename logic treats as the same name.
  • The objective check rejects expansion before renaming.
  • The view check covers the view query and each CTE query. A collision sets Views::clash.
  • names_alike_but_for_case_leave_the_objective_to_the_engine asserts that expansion returns None for both direct reads of Model and model and reads through a view.

The regression test is in crates/ddx-ad/src/sql/views.rs. I inspected its assertions but did not run tests.

A loss may read a view whose layers read each other more than once, as a
model defined with `CREATE VIEW` does. A backend with a `view_sql(name)` method
returns the view's SQL. ddxdb then writes the view into the loss as CTEs, so
each layer is planned once rather than copied at every read.
`DataFusionBackend` reads the SQL from DataFusion's information schema. The
information schema is on in a bare `SessionContext()`. A context made from its
own `SessionConfig` needs `.with_information_schema(True)`; without it, ddxdb

I think this project's top level readme is getting long. This is an internal detail that users can learn about from reading documentation, I don't think it's that helpful for initially discovering and understanding this project.

I think people might assume, without knowing it explicitly, that it would behave this way anyway -- that the SQL they would want to write would "just work".

Agreed, removed in 1b6ef1c. The one thing a user can't guess, that a context made from its own SessionConfig needs .with_information_schema(True), now sits in DataFusionBackend.view_sql's docstring, and ddxdb warns at run time when it's missing.

Narrowed in 1b6ef1c to except ValueError. That's what datafusion-python raises when planning fails, here because information_schema.df_settings isn't found.

It's more pythonic to index to -3.

What does +parts do here?

I tried it, and the existing test test_a_view_in_another_schema_is_not_read_for_a_table_of_its_name failed. A name leaves out its leading parts. other.v lacks only the catalog, so it needs the front of the defaults, but (["datafusion", "public"] + ["other", "v"])[-3:] gives ["public", "other", "v"]. 1b6ef1c keeps the slice inside a named helper, _qualified(parts, defaults), whose docstring says this.

+ parts appends the name's own parts after the defaults it lacks: ["datafusion"] + ["other", "v"] gives catalog, schema and table. 1b6ef1c moves this into _qualified so it reads by name.

Can you search if there is a more idiomatic way to do this, maybe via fstrings?

At least use a def/function in the closure.

Better than f-strings: 1b6ef1c binds the values as query parameters (WHERE table_catalog = $1 ..., param_values={...}), so there's no quoting to get right and the lambda is gone.

Can we use def instead of a lambda?

Yes. In 1b6ef1c it's a module-level def _plan_under_alias(ctx, sql) with a docstring.

Same issue as the other [-3:]: it would put public in the catalog's place for a two-part name. It goes through _qualified now (1b6ef1c).

Too broad of an exception.

Narrowed in 1b6ef1c. A missing catalog or schema raises KeyError. A missing table raises a bare Exception in datafusion-python, so I check table_exist first rather than catching it.

Learning: In xqlsystems/ddx, crates/ddx-ad/src/sql/views.rs conservatively abandons view expansion when the objective has a one-part catalog read whose name starts with __ddx_view_ (case-insensitive), or when a parsed view definition encountered during recursive expansion has such a read. A collision found in a view sets Views::clash and invalidates the entire expansion. Catalog reads from later-discovered views cannot be protected by generated-name allocation order alone.

Timestamp: 2026-10-20T00:52:44.616Z
Learning: In xqlsystems/ddx, view SQL lookup must follow the session's datafusion.sql_parser.enable_ident_normalization setting. The Rust Backend implementation in crates/ddx-datafusion/src/engine.rs uses TableReference::parse_str_normalized(name, !normalize). Python DataFusionBackend.view_sql in python/ddxdb/ddxdb/ad.py reads the setting from information_schema.df_settings and passes it to _name_parts, which lowercases only unquoted parts when normalization is enabled. With normalization disabled, unquoted Model and model can identify different views.

A soak property, `the_fast_paths_move_no_gradient`, holds each recent
fast path to the gradient of the same loss planned whole:

- the split, under decoy tables named like the CTEs, CTE names spelled
  as the engine resolves them alike, a root read twice and another CTE
  read inside a subquery;
- views, from SQL and from DataFrames, chained, the whole loss as a
  view, and decoy views in another schema;
- the program cache, run twice with a view's definition, a table's
  values or type, or decoys changed in between;
- shared relations: grad, jvp and jvp of grad of the engine's plan with
  subtrees moved behind ReferenceRel.

Found #171 (an uncorrelated EXISTS builds a program DataFusion cannot
run), #172 (a view keeps the tables it was created over), and a view
redefinition #169 writes out wrongly (commented there).
