fix(ddx-ad, ddxdb): differentiate xarray-sql's models on DuckDB - #200
Wiring ddxdb 0.4.1 into xarray-sql's ML demos found four DuckDB bugs. Two of them, #195 and #197, block every demo on DuckDB.
How
DuckDB: a loss that reads a view with a multiply-read CTE fails (Not implemented Error: CTE) #195, a view whose CTE is read more than once. DuckDB's Substrait producer has no plan for a CTE it materializes, and each model is a view whose layers are read twice. DuckDBBackend.view_sql now gives a view's SQL, so rewrite plans the view's CTEs itself, as it already does on DataFusion (perf(ddx-ad): write the views an objective reads as its CTEs #169). DuckDB binds a view's SQL by name each time it runs, so the SQL means what runs. It is given for a temporary view or one in the current schema, where names resolve as in the query; a view elsewhere is left to DuckDB. A temporary table found first under the name is read instead, as DuckDB reads it.
DuckDB: a CTE with AS [NOT] MATERIALIZED makes ddx skip the rewrite (grad does not exist) #196, AS [NOT] MATERIALIZED. sqlparser parses the hint only in its Postgres dialect. So on DuckDB the statement didn't parse, and ran with grad unrewritten. The call finder and a view's definition now parse with each hint blanked out, then put it back on its CTE, so the statement DuckDB runs keeps it (sql/parse.rs).
DuckDB: a window over an aggregate isn't differentiated (works on DataFusion) #197, a window over an aggregate. ddx-ad differentiated only DataFusion's form of a window: window functions inside a projection. DuckDB writes a ConsistentPartitionWindowRel. grad, vjp and jvp now read one as the projection of its functions, which outputs the same columns. DuckDB also writes OVER () as RANGE BETWEEN UNBOUNDED PRECEDING AND CURRENT ROW. With no ORDER BY, every row is the current row's peer, so that frame is the whole partition, and whole_partition now says so. Before, a window on DuckDB was differentiated only when DuckDB happened to rewrite it as a join to an aggregate (MAX(…) OVER (PARTITION BY g) over a table).
On the DuckDB backend, DuckDB both plans and runs every step, so a cast means DuckDB's rounding throughout. The proposed fix would make the steps disagree with the user's query. Details on #193.
Tests
New, DuckDB:
a view whose CTE is read twice;
which views' SQL is given, including a temporary table that shadows a view;
both hints;
a softmax normalizer over an aggregate, and OVER () over a table, against values worked out by hand;
the docs example.
New, Rust: a window relation read as a projection, and which frames are the whole partition. Also parse.rs's tests: a hint in either dialect, nested or across lines, the parser's own errors kept, and a column named materialized.
Passing:ddxdb's Python tests (95, plus the one expected failure) and ddx-ad's unit tests (123). The full DataFusion suite in both modes is left to CI: my local run ran out of disk.

Walkthrough
The changes add window-relation normalization and whole-partition frame handling for differentiation. They add SQL parsing that preserves CTE materialization hints and DuckDB view SQL lookup. Tests cover these paths and the DuckDB module example.
Forward, JVP, and composition processing convert window relations into projections before further plan processing. The conversion retains relation settings and window metadata. Tests cover conversion, plans without window functions, and window differentiation cases.
An unsorted RANGE frame ending at CURRENT ROW is treated as a whole-partition frame. Tests distinguish this from sorted RANGE, ROWS, and preceding bounds.
A shared parser recognizes supported MATERIALIZED and NOT MATERIALIZED hints, blanks them while parsing, and restores them on matching CTEs. SQL call and view parsing use the helper. Tests cover hint handling and parser errors.

Summary
Parse and resolve view names python/ddxdb/ddxdb/__init__.py, python/ddxdb/ddxdb/ad.py, python/ddxdb/ddxdb/duckdb.py
A shared helper parses quoted and unquoted table names. DuckDBBackend.view_sql resolves supported names and returns SQL for views in the temporary or current schema. The example creates and populates its table with separate statements.

Tests cover multiply referenced view CTEs, view-name resolution, and execution of the module example.
xqlsystems/ddx#149: The changes add whole-partition window handling and update the DuckDB example’s table setup.
xqlsystems/ddx#194: The module example now creates and populates its table separately, and a test executes the example.
xqlsystems/ddx#195: DuckDB view SQL lookup supports the view differentiation path, including a view with a multiply referenced CTE.
xqlsystems/ddx#196: The shared parser preserves CTE materialization hints while parsing SQL used for differentiation.
xqlsystems/ddx#197: Window relations are normalized for plan processing, and tests cover window differentiation over aggregates.

Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 3c95a
The changes have no established merge-blocking risk; normal validation can proceed.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3c95a
The changes constrain view expansion by database and schema and preserve temporary-object shadowing. No introduced security issue was established, but identifier and parser edge cases remain unverified.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — The inspected view-lookup path is bounded by metadata visible through the caller’s DuckDB connection. Eligibility limits which definitions are expanded, but does not prove that an eligible view reads data only from its own schema.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — Lookup checks temporary objects before the current-schema object for an unqualified name. A temporary table therefore prevents expansion of a same-named persistent view, and views outside the eligible schema scope are left to DuckDB.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — The new normalization step does not introduce a persistent transition requiring rollback: conversion affects an owned plan copy, while composition accumulates its result locally. A failed construction does not publish an After value through this constructor.

Full details: Linked Issues check
Explanation
The four active direct issues have coding requirements, and the reported implementation addresses each one. [#194] The DuckDB documentation example now creates a DOUBLE value column, explains the DuckDB decimal-literal behavior, and has an automated example test. [#195] DuckDBBackend.view_sql supplies SQL for temporary and current-schema views, while temporary tables retain name-resolution precedence; the rewrite then handles shared CTEs. The linked current-schema repro is covered. [#196] The SQL parser fallback blanks AS MATERIALIZED and AS NOT MATERIALIZED only for parsing, restores the hints on the parsed CTEs, and preserves parser errors for unrelated invalid SQL. Tests cover both hints and nested cases. [#197] DuckDB window relations are converted to projections before plan splitting and differentiation, and the RANGE frame emitted for OVER () is treated as a whole-partition frame. Tests cover aggregate windows, the jvp path, and frame behavior. The stated refusal of plain joins remains within the issue's design boundary.

Explanation
The changed areas remain connected to the linked issues. The _name_parts move supports DuckDB view lookup for [#195]. The parser module and its callers support [#196] and view-definition parsing for [#195]. The window rewrites, After::new ordering change, shared-relation handling, and frame logic support [#197]. The documentation setup change and test support [#194]. The DataFusion regression test and Rust unit tests validate the [#197] behavior. No unrelated change is established by the supplied whole-PR summary.

- A view whose CTE is read more than once: DuckDB's producer has no plan
for the CTE it materializes. DuckDBBackend.view_sql gives a view's SQL
(a temporary view or one in the current schema, where names resolve as
the query's), so rewrite plans the view's CTEs itself (#195).
- `AS [NOT] MATERIALIZED`: sqlparser parses it only for Postgres, so on
DuckDB the statement ran with `grad` unrewritten. It is parsed with the
hint blanked out and put back on its CTE (#196).
- A window: DuckDB writes a ConsistentPartitionWindowRel, which grad,
vjp and jvp now read as the projection of its functions, and OVER () as
RANGE up to the current row, which with no ORDER BY is the whole
partition (#197).
- The docs example makes `val` a DOUBLE: `1.0` is DECIMAL on DuckDB, and
a test runs the example (#194).

…ints
- Remove the docs' DECIMAL paragraph (review).
- view_sql reads the catalog and current schema, not a full planner
sync, for each name the rewrite asks about.
- A two-part name is also a database's main schema (`memory.m`).
- A hint is one only on a CTE in a WITH list whose query follows, so a
table alias named `materialized` with a column list is left alone.

From review: jvp of a query splits the plan at the relations it shares
before dual_plan rewrites window relations, and `width` didn't know a
window relation, so a window read more than once failed in jvp. The
query's windows are now rewritten before the split, and `width` counts
a window relation's columns (its input's, then one per function).
The forward test that expected a window relation over a shared relation
to be refused now checks that grad and jvp read it.

Normalize windows before After::new splits the query.
After::new passes its raw query to dag_steps. A shared RelType::Window then reaches redeclare_rel, which returns AdError::NotImplemented("a window in a query over another call"). This blocks the query-over-program differentiation workflow.
Normalize the query before root_of and dag_steps. Do not add a downstream redeclare_rel workaround.

Make this regression test exercise a real shared window function.
The test currently uses an empty window_functions list, references the relation once, and discards both results. It only verifies successful construction. Populate the window with a real function, use the relation from both relevant paths, and assert the Forward and JVP output width, values, gradients, and tangents.

From review: a query over another call's result (jvp of a query that
reads a grad, say) is split and its relations redeclared in
After::new, which refused a window relation. Its windows are now
rewritten first, as grad's and jvp's are.

Outside the diff, After::new: confirmed and fixed in 3c95aa7, as suggested. After::new now rewrites the query's window relations before root_of, dag_steps and the redeclaration. Without it, DuckDB refused a jvp whose query reads a grad through a window ("a window in a query over another call"). New test: test_a_window_over_a_call_is_differentiated in test_duckdb.py. It fails without the fix and passes with it, and its values match DataFusion's and a hand calculation.
Nitpick, the Rust regression test: leaving it as a construction check. It guards the shapes that used to fail, a window relation over a shared relation in Forward::new and in jvp's split. The Python tests cover real window functions end to end, against hand-worked values, on the DuckDB plans that produce them.

Why
