Stacked on #301. Stack for #237: #299 → #300 → #301 → #302 → #303 → #309 → #312 (docs).

coreAI.embeddingModel(...) rejected until now. It now runs AI SDK embed and embedMany on CLIP-style exports, and embeds images into the same space.

What changes

  • Text, through the AI SDK: values are tokenized with the CLIP tokenizer to 77 tokens, run through the model's encode_text(input_ids, attention_mask) function 16 at a time (providerOptions['core-ai'].batchSize), and come back as the embeddings. providerMetadata['core-ai'].dimensions reports the size.
  • Images, direct: the AI SDK has no image embedding call, so model.embedImages(imageUris) runs encode_image, as CoreAI.runTask('embedding', ...) under the hood. It applies CLIP's preprocessing: shorter side to 224, center crop, CLIP mean and std.
  • Model layout: a folder holding the .aimodel and a tokenizer/ folder with tokenizer.json. The function names can be overridden (textFunction, imageFunction), and fixed-batch exports get padded batches.
  • No new product: CLIPTokenizer comes from CoreAIShared, which every coreai-models product links, so embeddings work with any task list.

Model

grabbou/clip-vit-base-patch32-CoreAI (290 MB, iOS and macOS).

Apple's models/clip recipe traces one function that needs an image and a fixed batch of three prompts on every call, padded to the longest prompt rather than 77 tokens. That shape can't embed text or images on their own, so the repo's export.py, based on the recipe, exports:

  • encode_text: [batch, 77] int32
  • encode_image: [batch, 3, 224, 224] float16

Both have a dynamic batch of 1–64 and L2-normalized 512-dim outputs. I checked it on the Mac with the Core AI Python runtime first: the cats photo scores 0.271 for "a photo of two cats", 0.202 for soup and 0.177 for a car.

Testing

  • bun test: provider options and metadata pass through doEmbed, and embedImages sends one batch through the embedding task
  • On iPhone 17 Pro (iOS 27), harness/core-ai/embeddings.device.harness.ts: 5/5 pass. It covers unit-length 512-dim text embeddings, similar captions closer than unrelated ones, 20 values in two batches matching one-by-one embedding, the cats photo nearest the cats caption, and batched images. The vision tasks from feat(core-ai): upscale, classify and estimate depth of images #301 still pass on the same build (11/11 together)

Merge Risk: Low · up to 9c591

Image embeddings work for normal use. A malformed normalization option can crash the app instead of returning an error, and embedding a large list of images may use more memory than needed. Both are worth fixing but are unlikely to affect typical use.

Security architecture risk: Moderate · up to 9c591

The new embedding API remains on-device and does not expand service privileges. However, an incompatible or manipulated model can reach unchecked memory reads, and fixed-size batches can return synthetic results beyond the requested inputs. The exposure is bounded to applications using the affected embedding paths.

Retained concerns

  • Medium · security · inferred: The new text embedding path trusts model tensor dimensions when copying generated token data into native arrays. It checks input_ids rank but accepts attention_mask without checking shape compatibility or payload length. For example, fixed input_ids [1,77] and attention_mask [1,154] cause the mask copy to iterate beyond the 77 generated values. This creates an inferred native-memory read or process-failure path when the host selects an incompatible or manipulated export. The base embedding operation rejected these requests, while the existing raw-function constructor validates shape and byte count before copying. No working disclosure exploit or code execution was established.
  • Low · architecture · observed: Fixed-size padding is retained in successful public results rather than removed. The batch helper pads the final batch, and both embedding loops retain prefix(batch.count), where batch.count already includes padding. Consequently, a fixed batch of three can return three embeddings for one requested input. These synthetic rows have no corresponding request item, violating request/result identity at the API boundary. No downstream cross-user assignment or persistence effect was demonstrated.
Security review details

Security Blast Radius

  • inferred — The demonstrated architectural exposure is within the invoking application process and its existing local-file authority. Model selection requires host configuration; images use the existing local-file loader. These paths do not establish a network-facing endpoint, tenant boundary crossing, or privilege gain. A manipulated model reaching the new integer-copy path could compromise process failure containment and potentially memory confidentiality; actual disclosure was not demonstrated.

Security Findings and Attack Paths

  • inferred — The new attack path is model-controlled attention-mask dimensions to unchecked tensor construction to native pointer copying. Matching input and mask shapes are strong counterevidence for normal exports, but the copy occurs before function.run and therefore cannot rely on inference-time validation to prevent the read.

Trust Boundaries and Controls

  • observed — Model and image paths retain the existing app-to-native authority boundary. At the model-data-to-memory boundary, the established raw-function constructor checks rank, compatible positive dimensions, and exact byte count. The new integer constructor checks scalar type but does not preserve those shape and byte-count controls.

Resilience and Maintainability Implications

  • observed — The new embedding work uses unregistered asynchronous tasks, following the existing non-stream inference pattern. Handle unloading does not cancel this work or clear the shared inference cache. Function loading is locked, but concurrent inference safety depends on external SDK guarantees not established by the repository; this remains an inherited lifecycle limitation rather than a verified new isolation failure.

Hardening Proposals

  • proposed — Centralize checked tensor construction across inference paths: verify compatible positive dimensions, generated element counts, and byte lengths before unsafe copying. Validate normalization overrides at runtime so malformed options fail through the error contract rather than trapping the process.

Base automatically changed from feat/core-ai-vision-tasks to main October 27, 2026 07:52
coreAI.embeddingModel(...) now runs AI SDK embed and embedMany on a
CLIP-style export: an .aimodel with encode_text and encode_image
functions next to the CLIP tokenizer, which every coreai-models product
ships. model.embedImages(imageUris) embeds images into the same space,
since the AI SDK has no image embeddings.
