refactor(core-ai)!: take the model source as one string and drop unused config fields - #345
Simplifies the Core AI model config. Stacked on #340.
source is one string, resolved natively:
a path or a file:// URL in app storage
bundle:// plus a path in the app bundle, e.g. bundle://models/qwen3-0.6b, for models shipped with the app
So bundled models need no file system API (expo-file-system or similar) to find the bundle path, and configs stay static. A missing bundle file rejects with CORE_AI_MISSING_SOURCE, which names the path.
id is optional. It only ever named the model, as the AI SDK modelId (in results, telemetry and DevTools) and in info.id. It now defaults to the folder or .aimodel name.
Removed:
variant: native code never read it. The loaders read the bundle's own files, so it had no effect, though the docs said it picked the platform.
family: only echoed back in info.
toNativeModelConfig: the config now has the native shape, so CoreAI.loadModel(config) and the other native calls take it as is.
Breaking, but the package hasn't been released. The website docs follow in #342, and draft #341 (downloadModel returns a source) will need the string form when it's rebased.
Tests:
Unit tests: 56 pass, including the default id and the config passed to native as is.
On an iPhone 17 Pro: the availability, generate, raw-function, vision, vision-tasks, embeddings and transcription suites pass, 41 of 41 tests. That includes new tests for a missing bundle:// source and the default id.

Walkthrough
Core AI model configurations now use string sources instead of tagged file or bundle objects. Model IDs can be inferred from the source. JavaScript and iOS code pass and resolve the updated configuration, and examples, harness setups, tests, and documentation reflect the new format.
Changes: Core AI model source update
Layer / File(s)
Summary
Source contract and ID inference packages/core-ai/src/types.ts, packages/core-ai/src/NativeCoreAI.ts, packages/core-ai/src/__tests__/ai-sdk.test.ts
Model sources are strings. The ID is optional, and getModelId derives a fallback from the source path. Native model info no longer includes family.
SDK model operations pass configurations directly to native methods. The iOS bridge maps source and conditionally maps id and task. The package no longer exports toNativeModelConfig.
iOS source resolution and errors packages/core-ai/ios/CoreAIImpl.swift, packages/core-ai/ios/CoreAIError.swift, harness/core-ai/availability.device.harness.ts
iOS resolves bundle URLs, file URLs, and plain paths from source. Missing bundle resources return a source-specific error. Model information uses a source-derived fallback ID. Harness tests check missing sources and inferred IDs.
Examples, harness setup, and documentation apps/expo-example/src/components/adapters/coreAISetupAdapter.ts, harness/core-ai/helpers.ts, packages/core-ai/README.md, packages/core-ai/docs/*
Examples and harness setup configurations use string sources. Documentation describes local paths, file:// URLs, bundle:// paths, and default model IDs.
callstackincubator/ai#235: The string source format supports local paths and file:// URLs for local models. This change does not implement remote download or caching.
Merge Risk: Minimal · up to 83b00
No merge-blocking issue was identified; the change is ready for normal merge checks.
Security architecture risk: Low · up to 3b72c
The configuration change is coordinated across the inspected JavaScript and iOS code. No newly expanded file-access privilege or identity-based ownership failure was established. Remaining uncertainty concerns bundle-path confinement, compatibility during upgrades, and unverified native runtime behavior.
Retained concerns
No architecture-level concerns identified.
Security review details
Security Blast Radius
inferred — A caller controlling model configuration can influence local file inspection, model loading, and source deletion within the native process's effective filesystem permissions. Arbitrary file sources and source-based deletion already existed at the comparison base; the inspected change does not establish greater process authority or a new remote-service boundary.
Trust Boundaries and Controls
observed — The native bridge remains the JavaScript-to-filesystem boundary. Its explicit field mapping limits the forwarded configuration shape, but source remains caller-selected. The resolver converts strings to local file URLs rather than introducing an HTTP-fetching branch.
Resilience and Maintainability Implications
inferred — Different source directories can produce the same fallback public ID, but the inspected ownership and cleanup paths use native handles or the source itself. No cross-model ownership failure from fallback-ID collisions was established; external consumers that might treat modelId as an authorization or cache key remain unverified.
Hardening Proposals
proposed — If bundle:// is intended to guarantee bundle-only access, validate the canonical, symlink-resolved path against the bundle root. Separately distinguish shipped resources from removable app-owned assets before deletion. These are hardening proposals, not verified privilege-escalation findings introduced by this PR.

component only when config.source starts with file://, before stripping the
.aimodel or .aimodelc suffix; preserve the raw component if decoding fails and
leave ordinary paths and bundle:// sources unchanged. Apply the same
file://-only decoding rule in the corresponding Swift model-ID logic so native
metadata and JavaScript IDs remain consistent.
