Description

make install rebuilt the programs when a source file looked new.
sudo make install then failed because root has no cargo.

make still builds the programs.
sudo make install now only copies the built files.

install-data also called install-data-asusd_user, but that target had no recipe.
make install stopped before it copied the user unit.
The new recipe installs data/asusd-user.service.

Tested Hardware & Environment

  • ASUS Laptop Model: ROG Zephyrus G14 GA402RK
  • Linux Distribution: Ubuntu 26.04.1 LTS
  • Kernel Version: 7.0.0-42-generic

Verification and testing:

  • I have performed a self-review of my code
  • I have commented my code, particularly in hard-to-understand areas
  • I have made corresponding changes to the documentation
  • My code follows the style guidelines of this project (cargo fmt --all -- --check)
  • My changes generate no new warnings (cargo clippy --all -- -D warnings/cargo check --all-targets)
  • New and existing unit tests pass locally with my changes (cargo test --all)
  • Cranky with 0 warning (cargo cranky)

The change is only in the Makefile.
make -n install prints install commands and does not call cargo.
Build first with make. Then run sudo make install.

Summary

Summary by CodeRabbit

  • Build and Installation
    • Programs must now be built before installation; installation no longer triggers a build automatically.
    • The user service unit is now installed in the system’s standard systemd user-unit location.

The Makefile removes binary-file targets that invoked make build as installation prerequisites. It also changes the installation path for the asusd-user service unit to $(libdir)/systemd/user.

Remove the user unit during uninstall.

install-data-asusd_user installs $(DESTDIR)$(libdir)/systemd/user/$(BIN_U).service. uninstall does not remove that file. After an install and uninstall cycle, the user unit stays on disk. Its ExecStart points to the asusd-user binary, which uninstall removes, so the leftover unit refers to a missing program.
