Names.parse_comet and interstellar designations #460
Hello, and thank you for sbpy. In 0.6.0, and on main, whose names.py is the same, Names.parse_comet("2I/Borisov") raises "2I/Borisov does not appear to be a comet name". The fix looks small: parse_comet's patterns take the types [PDCX], and parse_asteroid already knows interstellar designations ([PDCXI], "comet or interstellar desig"). Adding I (and A, for "A/2017 U1") to parse_comet's types would give {'type': 'I', 'number': 2, 'name': 'Borisov'}, the shape it gives "2P/Encke". Of the 16 legal forms of 1I-3I's names we tried, 4 parse today (the C/ ones).

Thanks, but I think the current behavior is appropriate. It is documented at https://sbpy.readthedocs.io/en/stable/sbpy/data/names.html#a-objects-asteroids-in-cometary-orbits and https://sbpy.readthedocs.io/en/stable/sbpy/data/names.html#interstellar-objects . In summary, A/ objects are considered asteroids, and the cometary or asteroidal nature of I/ objects cannot be determined with their I/ name. I'll close this issue now, but if this doesn't resolve it for you, please comment and we can reconsider re-opening.
